Pritam Singh Issues Apology for Contemptuous Remarks on CNA
Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh has publicly apologised for comments he made during an interview on Channel NewsAsia’s program, The Assembly. Following a notice from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Singh acknowledged that his remarks could be interpreted as contempt of court. In a Facebook post dated December 13, he stated, “I accept that my statements may be construed to be in contempt of court, including to impugn the integrity, propriety or impartiality of the court.”
The interview, which aired on November 5, featured Singh addressing a question about being labelled a liar. This episode was recorded in July, shortly before the High Court dismissed Singh’s appeal against his conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee on December 4, 2023. Following the court’s decision, Singh has reaffirmed his acceptance of the court’s judgment, stating he will refrain from similar comments in the future.
Singh’s statements during the interview drew criticism from various quarters, including the Ministry of Law. The ministry articulated that Singh suggested the prosecution and his conviction were politically motivated, thereby questioning the integrity of the judicial process. Minister for Law Edwin Tong noted on November 8 that Singh’s remarks undermined public trust in the legal system, describing them as “completely unacceptable.”
The Attorney-General’s Chambers had alerted Singh on November 28 regarding the potential contempt implications of his comments, prompting the subsequent apology. The ministry appreciated Singh’s acknowledgment that it is inappropriate for politicians to challenge the integrity of the judiciary.
Public trust in the judiciary is essential for a well-functioning democracy, and the ministry emphasized that the judiciary serves as a cornerstone of Singapore’s success. The situation illustrates the delicate balance between political discourse and respect for the legal system in Singapore, highlighting the responsibilities that come with public office.
