Khaleda Zia in Critical Condition as Family Calls for Prayers
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia, is currently in intensive care, prompting her family and political party to request citizens to pray for her recovery. Zia, aged 80, was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka on November 23, 2023, with symptoms indicative of a lung infection. As of the latest updates on November 29, her condition has been described as “very critical,” according to a member of her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Health Condition and Family Response
Ahmed Azam Khan, a BNP official, informed reporters that Zia remains under close medical supervision, with ongoing consultations among her physicians. An air ambulance is on standby, ready to transport her abroad for advanced medical treatment should her condition improve.
In light of her deteriorating health, several senior BNP leaders and supporters have gathered at the hospital, eager for updates. A report from the English-language newspaper, The Daily Star, highlighted Zia’s extensive health issues, including heart problems, diabetes, and complications with her liver and kidneys. She has a permanent pacemaker and has previously undergone heart stenting.
Zia’s eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has resided in London since 2008, expressed his gratitude to the public for their prayers and support. In a social media post, he urged citizens to continue their prayers for his mother’s recovery. “I share the same deep longing as any child to have my mother’s touch in moments of crisis,” Rahman shared, acknowledging the complexities that prevent his return to Bangladesh.
Political Context and Public Sentiment
Khaleda Zia served three terms as prime minister and was imprisoned for corruption in 2018 under the government of Sheikh Hasina. Although she was released last year, her previous conviction has hindered her ability to travel abroad for medical care. Despite her serious health challenges, Zia has pledged to participate in the upcoming elections expected in February 2026, where the BNP is anticipated to be a leading contender.
As news of her condition spread, supporters gathered outside the hospital, including Liton Molla, a private company driver, who described Zia as his “dear leader.” He expressed hope for her recovery, stating, “At this moment, Bangladesh needs a leader like Khaleda Zia.”
In a statement, interim leader Muhammad Yunus emphasized Zia’s importance during Bangladesh’s transitional period to democracy, calling her recovery vital for the nation’s future.
The situation remains fluid, with many closely monitoring Zia’s health and the implications for Bangladesh’s political landscape. As family and party members continue to rally for her recovery, the nation watches closely, hoping for the best outcome for a figure who has been a central force in Bangladeshi politics for decades.
