Kazakhstan Champions AI Collaboration with Japan at Summit
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan has voiced strong support for the Tokyo Initiative, which aims to foster collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) between Japan and Central Asian nations. This endorsement was made during the Central Asia+Japan Summit, where Tokayev underscored the strategic significance of digital transformation and AI development in the region.
During his address, Tokayev highlighted Japan’s reputation for delivering high-quality, reliable, and technologically advanced innovations. He emphasized Kazakhstan’s ambition to evolve into a digital state, showcasing recent developments such as the establishment of the Alem International Artificial Intelligence Center and the deployment of two supercomputers utilizing American technology.
Advancing Digital Strategies
Looking ahead, Tokayev announced that the Digital Kazakhstan strategy will commence in 2024. This initiative is set to focus on the digitalization of various sectors, including industry, the public sector, social services, and education. The goal is to create a conducive environment for the growth of AI and digital technologies within the country.
As part of his proposal, Tokayev suggested that the new AI partnership platform under the Tokyo Initiative be hosted at Astana Hub, Central Asia’s largest IT startup technopark. This venue, along with the Alem International Center, is expected to provide the necessary infrastructure and international ecosystem to enhance regional AI collaboration.
In October 2023, Kazakhstan made significant strides in the AI sector by launching its first research university dedicated to artificial intelligence. This initiative was announced during the Digital Bridge 2025 international forum held in Astana, further solidifying the country’s commitment to becoming a leader in AI innovation.
Through these efforts, Kazakhstan not only aims to strengthen its ties with Japan but also aspires to set a benchmark for AI development in Central Asia. The collaborative framework established through the Tokyo Initiative could pave the way for enhanced technological exchange and innovation across the region.
