The newly refurbished Temasek Shophouse in Singapore is set to open its doors to the public on September 29, 2023, marking the start of its soft launch. This revitalized space aims to serve as a central hub for social changemakers and a vibrant gathering place for the community. The full suite of features, including two outdoor spaces, will be unveiled by January 2026.

Temasek Shophouse has expanded by merging its original premises with three adjoining heritage buildings, creating a significant social impact hub. These shophouses, built in the early 19th century, are among the few remaining structures on downtown Orchard Road designated for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The design intentionally preserves historical elements, such as century-old staircases and tiles, alongside modern amenities.

Notably, visitors will find a facade featuring the faded sign of The Orchard Restaurant And Bar, alongside remnants of the automobile industry from the 1920s. These elements reflect the rich history of the area, previously home to landmarks like the Malayan Motors showroom and Midfilm House.

Expanded Facilities for Changemakers

The redesign of Temasek Shophouse aims to foster collaboration among changemakers by providing ample space for interaction. The hub now boasts 60 co-working spaces, tripling its previous capacity. A newly established media studio is equipped for podcast and video production, which aligns with the launch of the Impact Storytellers Collective. This initiative will train changemakers to craft and amplify impactful narratives.

According to Yvonne Tay, General Manager of Temasek Shophouse, “Bringing changemakers together under one roof enables collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas essential to addressing complex challenges.” The hub will also offer three dedicated event spaces, an increase from one, to accommodate a variety of gatherings. The Living Room, the smallest venue, can host up to 100 people, while the Tembusu Canopy and Banyan Cove can accommodate 200 and 220 people, respectively.

To further support local social enterprises and charities, the newly launched Temasek Shophouse Collective offers tailored resources, including access to co-working desks, event venues, and networking opportunities. Members can connect with a global network of over 110 like-minded hubs, enhancing their reach and impact.

A Blend of Heritage and Modern Offerings

For the public, Temasek Shophouse will also introduce a variety of retail and food and beverage options, addressing the community’s need for social spaces outside of home and work. Martket by Abry, a Singaporean fashion and lifestyle brand, will provide socially responsible retail experiences. The space is designed to empower underserved communities through mentorship and responsible retail practices.

Food enthusiasts will enjoy Bibik Violet, an all-day café by the Violet Oon Group serving Peranakan cuisine, along with Foreword Coffee, a social enterprise that promotes inclusive employment for individuals with disabilities.

The layout of Temasek Shophouse connects the four shophouses through a single corridor, enhancing visitor experience. An AI-animated video by artist Lip Chiong brings archival images of Singapore’s streets to life, while a mini-gallery called Shophouse BAR features local books and social impact displays.

Upcoming events at Temasek Shophouse include the Let’s Jam concert on September 29, the Come Together concert from November 1 to 3, and the Green House festival on November 8 to 9. The hub plans to host seasonal markets and workshops that showcase heritage and innovation, fostering community engagement.

As the hub prepares to fully launch, the revitalized outdoor spaces, Stamford Canal and Handy Green park, are expected to welcome visitors in January 2026. “Third spaces are vital to social-emotional learning and community health,” Tay emphasized. “We have designed Temasek Shophouse to be a welcoming environment where people can gather and be inspired.”
