Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam Visits Mexico for Historic Talks
Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will embark on his inaugural state visit to Mexico from November 30 to December 3, 2023. This visit marks a significant milestone, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Mexico, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
Upon arrival, President Tharman will be welcomed with an official ceremony at the National Palace in Mexico City. He is scheduled to meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss various matters of mutual interest. His itinerary also includes meetings with key political figures, including Clara Brugada, the head of government of Mexico City, and Laura Itzel Castillo Juarez, the President of the Mexican Senate. These discussions aim to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new avenues for collaboration.
The visit will feature a significant cultural element, as President Tharman is set to lay a wreath at the Monument to the Heroic Cadets. This monument commemorates six teenage military cadets who lost their lives during the Mexican-American War, reflecting the historical ties that unite the two nations.
Business Engagements and Cultural Exchange
President Tharman will inaugurate the Mexico-Singapore Business Forum, aiming to enhance economic cooperation between both countries. Accompanying him are notable delegates, including David Neo, the Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Alvin Tan, the Minister of State for National Development and Trade and Industry. They will engage with business leaders to promote investment opportunities and trade relations.
Additionally, the visit includes the opening of an exhibition titled The Acapulco – Manila Galleon: We Are the Pacific, a World Born of the Tropics. This collaborative effort between Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum and the National Gallery Singapore will showcase around 80 works, featuring artefacts from both countries. This exhibition aims to highlight the cultural and historical connections between Singapore and Mexico, fostering greater understanding between the two nations.
President Tharman will be joined by his wife, Ms. Jane Ittogi, and a delegation that includes Members of Parliament Ang Wei Neng and Mariam Jaafar, along with officials from various Singaporean ministries and business representatives from the Singapore Business Federation and the Singapore Manufacturing Federation.
This visit not only signifies the strengthening of diplomatic relations but also underscores Singapore’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in trade, culture, and diplomacy.
