Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes for the start of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, a cultural and educational exchange programme that began on December 2, 2023. This initiative aims to enhance the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” which translates to “One India, Great India.” The event is set to run until December 15, taking place primarily in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Modi shared his thoughts on social media platform X, stating, “As the Kashi Tamil Sangamam begins today, I convey my best wishes for this vibrant programme which deepens the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.’ I wish everyone coming for the Sangamam a pleasant and memorable stay in Kashi!”

Bridging Cultures Through Education and Heritage

The fourth edition of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam seeks to revive the ancient civilisational, linguistic, and spiritual connections between Tamil Nadu and Varanasi. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, also expressed his excitement via X. He described the Sangamam as a “vibrant expression” of India’s unity and highlighted the theme for this year: “Let us Learn Tamil.”

Adityanath noted, “This grand event will once again serve as a medium to weave together the culture and traditions of North and South India into a single thread.” He emphasized that under Modi’s leadership, “today’s ‘New India’ is at the pinnacle of Vedic and cultural consciousness.”

First launched in 2022, the Kashi Tamil Sangamam has attracted a wide array of participants, including scholars, students, artists, and pilgrims from both regions. The previous editions have fostered significant cultural exchange, contributing to a greater understanding of India’s diverse heritage.

Significance of the Current Edition

The event this year features a particular emphasis on the Tamil language and its classical literary traditions, aiming to engage students from northern states in learning Tamil. The concluding ceremony will take place at Rameswaram, symbolically linking the sacred northern and southern ends of the Indian subcontinent.

While the third edition was originally scheduled for December 2024, it was rescheduled to take place from February 15 to 24, 2025. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam continues to strengthen the bonds between different regions of India, reinforcing the importance of cultural exchange in promoting national unity.

The Kashi Tamil Sangamam not only serves as a platform for celebrating the rich heritage of Tamil Nadu but also plays a crucial role in fostering connections that transcend geographical boundaries. As the event unfolds, it is anticipated to further enhance the ties between the people of both regions.
