PM Modi Celebrates INS Mahe Induction as Symbol of Naval Pride

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the recent induction of INS Mahe into the Indian Navy during the 128th episode of his monthly radio programme, ‘Mann Ki Baat’. He emphasized that this development signifies the Navy’s significant strides towards self-reliance, a matter he described as a source of great national pride. He stated, “Every Indian feels proud when India’s security ecosystem is strengthened,” highlighting the importance of the newly inducted vessel.

The induction ceremony took place in Mumbai last week, where Prime Minister Modi noted the indigenous design of INS Mahe, which has garnered considerable attention. The ship is named after Mahe, a location celebrated for its rich historical heritage. Modi pointed out that the vessel’s crest features the traditional flexible sword, Urumi, alongside symbols of the martial art Kalaripayattu. This reflects the cultural significance embedded in the Navy’s ongoing journey towards enhancing indigenous capabilities, which continues to evoke national pride.

Honoring Naval Legacy and Tourism

With Navy Day approaching on December 4, 2023, Modi used this opportunity to pay tribute to the “indomitable courage and valour” of naval personnel. He also underscored the relevance of Navy-related tourism in India, mentioning various locations where enthusiasts can delve into the maritime legacy of the nation.

The Prime Minister highlighted Diu, near Somnath in Gujarat, which hosts the ‘Khukhri Memorial and Museum’ dedicated to INS Khukri. He also noted the presence of the ‘Naval Aviation Museum’ in Goa, recognized as one of its kind in Asia. Other notable sites include the ‘Indian Naval Maritime Museum’ at INS Dronacharya in Fort Kochi, which offers insights into the history and evolution of the Indian Navy.

Modi further mentioned the ‘Samudrika — Naval Marine Museum’ in Srivijayapuram, formerly known as Port Blair, which showcases the region’s rich maritime history. The Warship Museum located on Rabindranath Tagore Beach in Karwar features replicas of missiles and other naval weaponry. Additionally, Visakhapatnam boasts a submarine, helicopter, and aircraft museum affiliated with the Indian Navy.

In his concluding remarks, Modi encouraged military history enthusiasts to make time to visit these museums, reinforcing the connection between historical appreciation and national pride. The induction of INS Mahe stands as a testament to India’s commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities and fostering a deeper understanding of its maritime heritage.
