MAMA Awards 2025 to Proceed in Hong Kong with Tribute to Fire Victims

The 2025 MAMA Awards will continue as planned in Hong Kong on November 28 and 29, despite a devastating apartment fire that has resulted in over 90 fatalities and many individuals still unaccounted for. This annual event, which has celebrated the K-pop industry since its inception in 1999, aims to honor the contributions of artists while acknowledging the recent tragedy.

Organizers released a statement on Thursday, November 27, expressing their profound condolences to those affected by the fire. “We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragic fire in Hong Kong. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this devastating event,” the statement read. They emphasized their commitment to offering support through music, stating, “We believe in the healing and unifying power of music and hope to provide comfort and support during this difficult time.”

The MAMA Awards will feature a “restrained production” this year, reflecting the somber atmosphere following the fire. As part of the ceremony, a moment of silence will be observed to honor the victims. Organizers noted, “Our stage and performances are being carefully and thoughtfully prepared with restrained production, so that even amid grief, they may offer small moments of courage and comfort.” Additionally, they have pledged to make donations to support the victims and their families.

In a separate announcement, the organizers confirmed that the red carpet event will be canceled. Nevertheless, the awards ceremony will still be broadcast live, allowing fans to participate from home. Viewers in Singapore can watch the event via streaming platform HBO Max and tvN Asia.

The 2025 MAMA Awards are expected to feature performances from prominent K-pop artists, including IVE, Aespa, G-Dragon, and Enhypen. A special performance will include a cover of the popular song “Golden” by members of Babymonster, specifically Pharita, Ahyeon, and Rora.

However, the recent tragedy has prompted some notable withdrawals from the ceremony. Among those who will not be attending are Hong Kong band Mirror, acclaimed actor Chow Yun-fat, and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh.
