Singaporean author Khir Johari has achieved significant recognition for his book, The Food Of Singapore Malays: Gastronomic Travels Through The Archipelago. On November 27, 2024, the book was awarded the prestigious Best Of All prize at the Gourmand Cookbook Awards, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This award is considered the highest honour in culinary publishing, often referred to as the “Oscars of culinary publishing.”

Khir’s work, which delves into the rich history of Malay cuisine in Singapore, is the culmination of an extensive 11-year research journey. The book spans 624 pages and features over 400 photographs along with 32 recipes that highlight foundational Malay dishes. Since its release in 2021, it has garnered multiple accolades, including the NUS Singapore History Prize in 2024, as well as titles for Best In The World and Best Of The Best In Food Culture at previous Gourmand Cookbook Awards.

In expressing his gratitude, Khir stated that receiving this honour is “deeply meaningful.” He emphasized the importance of showcasing the diverse foodways of the region, hoping to inspire others to document their own cultural histories. “What matters most to me is knowing that the foodways of our region are being seen and understood in a deeper, more nuanced way,” he remarked.

Khir’s journey began with a desire to tell the story of Singapore Malay food. However, he quickly realized that this narrative could not be separated from the broader context of history, geography, and culture surrounding the Singapore Malays. In a previous interview with Channel News Asia, he explained that food stories serve as a medium to trace the rich heritage of the community.

This latest accolade further solidifies Khir Johari’s status as a leading voice in culinary literature, illustrating the profound connection between food, culture, and identity. As his work continues to resonate with audiences, it serves as a reminder of the stories that food can tell across generations and borders.
