Embracing Joy: A Year-Long Journey to Rediscover Life’s Delights
In a quest to regain a sense of purpose, Kelvin Seah Lee Nguon, a former full-time lecturer, embarked on a year-long project called “My Delights” after a significant life change in 2018. Following the diagnosis of autism for his younger son, he transitioned to part-time work, becoming a stay-at-home father. This shift, while rewarding, led to feelings of purposelessness, prompting him to seek joy in daily moments.
The turning point for Nguon occurred on January 2, 2024, during a morning walk with his son along the scenic pathway of Pasir Ris Beach. They encountered an elderly couple playing wind instruments, evoking nostalgic memories from his childhood. This unexpected delight inspired Nguon to document similar moments throughout the year, aiming to appreciate life’s small joys.
Documenting Moments of Joy
The project involved jotting down unplanned, delightful experiences, often accompanied by photos and videos. Nguon’s intention was to create a mini showcase for his family at the end of the year. He set no strict expectations, understanding that some days might yield no delightful moments. Yet, he discovered that he could easily compile over ten such moments each month, sometimes experiencing multiple delights within a single week.
As Nguon continued this journey into 2025, he noted various serendipitous encounters. On January 6, he spotted a life-sized stuffed toy in a truck during rush hour, evoking laughter amidst the frustrating traffic. In February, he witnessed a heartfelt exchange between a father and son at a school gate, inspiring him to embrace tenderness with his own children.
In March, a whimsical moment unfolded when he saw a rooster crossing the road, highlighting the coexistence of humans and nature. A month later, a conversation with a passenger during his drive sparked inspiration, as she shared her unexpected academic opportunities.
The Importance of Micro-Moments
Nguon’s reflections extend beyond personal anecdotes; they resonate with a broader understanding of mental well-being. In a world where distractions abound, he emphasizes the significance of recognizing small, joyful moments. According to Barbara Fredrickson, director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, these “micro-moments of positivity” are essential for psychological health. They nourish the soul and contribute to personal growth.
Through this project, Nguon has learned to slow down and appreciate life more attentively. He acknowledges that while challenges persist, particularly concerning his wife’s health and family dynamics, focusing on these small joys has cultivated a sense of optimism within him.
As he looks forward to 2026, Nguon expresses a commitment to continue documenting these delightful moments, understanding that they play a vital role in shaping a more fulfilled and purposeful life. His journey serves as a reminder that joy can often be found in the most unexpected places, encouraging others to embrace their own moments of delight.
