Singaporean Creator Offers Free Haircuts to Local Residents
Aidan James Loo, a Singaporean digital marketer and content creator, provided free haircuts to residents in the Haig Road area on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023. In a heartwarming TikTok video, Loo showcased his initiative, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to give back to the community.
With a simple setup consisting of barbering tools, a plastic chair, and a tarp to catch hair, Loo offered his services at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) void deck. Throughout the day, he managed to trim the hair of nine residents, concluding his work at approximately 21:30. Many of his clients were elderly, and Loo greeted each one with a warm smile, creating an atmosphere of joy and community.
In a thoughtful gesture, Loo adjusted his approach when an elderly man expressed discomfort with the sound of an electric clipper. He switched to scissors, demonstrating his consideration for his clients’ needs. The appreciation from those he helped was evident, as they responded with smiles and well-wishes.
Despite a minor setback when authorities questioned him after his third haircut, Loo quickly resolved the situation and continued his work. His actions did not go unnoticed, as the comment section of his TikTok filled with praise. Viewers lauded his kindness and referred to his efforts as embodying the “kampung spirit,” a term reflecting community solidarity and support. One commenter remarked, “Now this is charity,” while another praised Loo for being responsible and considerate in maintaining a clean space with the tarp.
Loo is the founder of Francesco’s Barber Club, a social initiative inspired by the teachings of Pope Francis. The initiative focuses on providing free haircuts to individuals he encounters on the streets, including migrant workers. According to the initiative’s Instagram page, Loo has made it his mission to use his barbering skills for the greater good.
In a previous interview with local media platform Wakeup.sg, Loo shared his background, revealing that he had completed an apprenticeship at a friend’s barber shop. Although he is not currently running his own establishment, Loo remains committed to making a positive impact through his craft.
The story has resonated widely, showcasing how small acts of kindness can foster community spirit, particularly during the festive season. Loo’s efforts reflect a growing trend among individuals seeking to give back and support those around them.
