Alishan Forest Railway Celebrated in Lonely Planet’s Epic Guide
The Alishan Forest Railway has gained international recognition by being featured in *Lonely Planet’s* newly released guide, *Epic Train Trips of the World*. This designation makes it Taiwan’s sole representative among the 200 railway routes highlighted in the publication.
Released in September 2023, the guide showcases 13 rail routes across Asia, dedicating a four-page chapter to the historic Alishan route. The railway, which is over a century old, ascends steep terrains through switchbacks from Chiayi to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. Travelers are treated to stunning views as the train winds its way past lush tea plantations, dense woodlands, and ultimately into the clouds.
In a statement, the Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office noted that this recognition follows the complete reopening of the main line last year. The railway had undergone extensive reconstruction and repair work over several years to restore its functionality and safety.
Chou Heng-kai, Deputy Director of the Cultural Heritage Office, expressed that the acknowledgment from *Lonely Planet* significantly emphasizes the railway’s historical and cultural importance. He highlighted that this feature not only promotes tourism but also helps to preserve the heritage of the region.
The Alishan Forest Railway is renowned not just for its scenic beauty but also for its engineering marvels. The route is particularly famous for its steep gradients and tight curves, which were necessary to navigate the mountainous landscape. Travelers often describe the journey as a unique experience, blending natural beauty with rich cultural history.
The railway serves as a vital link for both tourists and locals, facilitating access to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, a popular destination for hiking and enjoying Taiwan’s breathtaking mountain scenery. The region is also known for its distinctive high-altitude tea production, which attracts tea enthusiasts from around the world.
The inclusion in *Lonely Planet’s* guidebook is expected to boost tourism to the area, as the publication is widely regarded as a go-to resource for travelers seeking authentic experiences. As international travel continues to regain momentum post-pandemic, the Alishan Forest Railway’s newfound spotlight may introduce it to a broader audience eager for exploration.
In summary, the Alishan Forest Railway’s feature in *Epic Train Trips of the World* marks a significant milestone for Taiwan’s tourism sector. It not only highlights the railway’s unique attributes but also reinforces the importance of preserving cultural heritage in an ever-evolving global landscape.
