HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital Forge Agreement for Proton Therapy
In a significant step towards advancing cancer treatment, the HKSH Medical Group and the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) focused on enhancing precision proton therapy. The agreement was officially signed on December 11, 2025, by Dr. Walton Li, the Chief Executive Officer of HKSH, and Professor Wang Luhua, the Director of Shenzhen Cancer Hospital.
The signing ceremony was attended by notable figures including Mr. Wyman Li, HKSH’s Chief Operating Officer, and Professor He Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center. This collaboration aims to bolster clinical applications of proton therapy, improve specialist training, and further cancer management research. It aligns with the objectives of the “Healthy China 2030” initiative, which seeks to enhance cancer patient survival rates across the nation.
The MOU establishes a framework for both organizations to engage in various collaborative efforts, reflecting an increasing demand for proton therapy across China. Proton therapy is a high-precision treatment that minimizes adverse side effects, making it a critical component in the fight against cancer. In June 2025, HKSH co-hosted a Proton Therapy Joint Training Programme in Beijing, further illustrating its commitment to this advanced treatment modality.
Enhancing Collaboration in Cancer Care
HKSH has made significant strides in proton therapy, evidenced by the launch of its own ten-month HKSH Proton Training Programme in August and the successful hosting of the annual conference for the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Cooperative Group in November. These initiatives position HKSH as a leader in the field, contributing to the development of advanced cancer treatment options.
Dr. Walton Li emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “As the first proton therapy centre in the Greater Bay Area and the sole facility in Hong Kong, HKSH meets the significant local and regional demand for precise cancer treatment. We are dedicated to training leading medical professionals and promoting high-level research initiatives.”
This partnership with Shenzhen Cancer Hospital, a key institution within the National Cancer Center’s Southern Branch, is expected to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance international engagement. Professor He Jie remarked on the importance of integrating high-quality medical resources from both Shenzhen and Hong Kong, referring to this initiative as a model for cancer prevention and treatment within the Greater Bay Area.
Future Directions and Mutual Benefits
The collaboration aims to establish a national cancer prevention and control network, addressing the growing need for advanced cancer treatment protocols. Both HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital are committed to sharing best practices in healthcare and training while enhancing cancer care services to meet international standards.
Mr. Wyman Li highlighted the synergy created through this partnership, stating, “This collaboration will facilitate an in-depth integration of healthcare management, talent development, and research innovation.” Both institutions intend to equip patients in both regions with precision medical services that align with global practices, ultimately enhancing cancer prevention and treatment capabilities.
In closing, Professor Wang Luhua emphasized the overarching goal of this collaboration: “By connecting Shenzhen with Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and extending our reach towards Southeast Asia, we can significantly enhance regional capabilities in comprehensive cancer prevention and treatment.”
The signing of this MOU marks a pivotal moment for both HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital, setting the stage for innovative approaches to tackle cancer and improve patient outcomes in the region.
