On December 11, 2025, HKSH Medical Group and the Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at advancing precision proton therapy in alignment with China’s national healthcare goals. The agreement was formalized at a ceremony attended by prominent figures, including Dr. Walton Li, Chief Executive Officer of HKSH, and Professor Wang Luhua, Director of Shenzhen Cancer Hospital.

This collaboration is part of a larger initiative to enhance cancer treatment methodologies as outlined by the National Cancer Center. The focus will be on improving clinical applications of proton therapy, which is known for its ability to minimize side effects while effectively targeting cancer cells. By reinforcing HKSH’s partnership with the National Cancer Center, the agreement addresses the increasing demand for advanced cancer treatment across the country.

Enhancing Cancer Care Through Collaboration

A primary goal of the Healthy China 2030 plan is to improve survival rates for cancer patients. High-precision proton therapy has emerged as a crucial method in achieving this objective. In June 2025, HKSH collaborated with the National Cancer Center and the Shenzhen Cancer Hospital to co-host the Proton Therapy Joint Training Programme in Beijing. Following that, HKSH launched a ten-month Proton Training Programme in August and successfully organized the annual conference of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Cooperative Group in November.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Li emphasized HKSH’s pivotal role as the first proton therapy center in the Greater Bay Area and the only facility of its kind in Hong Kong. He stated, “HKSH not only meets the significant local and regional demand for precise cancer treatment but also draws upon its extensive clinical and talent training experience. This positions us as a vital reference for the nation’s advancement of proton therapy.”

Professor He Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center, noted that this partnership represents a significant implementation of the Healthy China strategy. By integrating high-quality medical resources from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, they are building an internationally aligned platform for cancer prevention and treatment.

Strategic Goals and Future Directions

The collaboration aims to deepen the synergy of healthcare resources across the Greater Bay Area. Mr. Wyman Li, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH, highlighted that this partnership will facilitate the integration of healthcare management, talent development, and research innovation. This would ensure that patients receive precision medical services that adhere to international standards.

Professor Wang Luhua pointed out that the Shenzhen Cancer Hospital’s mission extends beyond local borders, aiming to connect with Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and even Southeast Asia. He believes that collaborating with HKSH, an institution with a century-long legacy, will enhance clinical methodologies, research innovation, and healthcare management.

The MOU establishes a framework for both short-term and long-term collaboration between the two institutions. They will share best practices in healthcare, training management, and medical talent cultivation. This partnership also includes mutual assistance in advanced treatment protocols, clinical trials, and high-end medical services, ultimately promoting cancer care services to meet international standards.

This significant collaboration between HKSH and the Shenzhen Cancer Hospital marks a crucial step toward improving cancer treatment capabilities and outcomes in the region, aligning with national health initiatives and enhancing the quality of care for patients.
