HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital Forge Alliance for Proton Therapy
On December 11, 2025, HKSH Medical Group and the Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen formalized a partnership through a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing proton therapy in line with China’s national health objectives. The agreement was signed by Dr. Walton Li, Chief Executive Officer of HKSH, and Professor Wang Luhua, Director of Shenzhen Cancer Hospital, during a ceremony that also featured key figures from both organizations.
This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to enhance the application of proton therapy across China, as advocated by the National Cancer Center. The initiative supports the Healthy China 2030 plan, which aims to improve cancer survival rates through innovative treatment methods. Proton therapy is gaining recognition for its precision and reduced side effects, making it a vital tool in cancer management.
Strengthening Cancer Care through Collaboration
The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Wyman Li, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH, and Professor He Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center, underscoring the importance of this collaboration. Both institutions aim to work together on clinical applications of proton therapy, training specialists, and conducting cancer management research. The partnership seeks to address the increasing demand for advanced cancer treatments across the nation.
Earlier in 2025, HKSH actively participated in the Proton Therapy Joint Training Programme in Beijing, co-hosted with the National Cancer Center and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital. This initiative included a ten-month training program, launched in August, designed to equip medical professionals with the skills necessary for high-precision cancer treatments. The annual conference of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Cooperative Group held in November further solidified HKSH’s role as a leader in this field.
Dr. Walton Li emphasized HKSH’s unique position as the only proton therapy center in Hong Kong and the first in the Greater Bay Area. He stated, “HKSH not only meets the significant local and regional demand for precise cancer treatment but also plays a crucial role in the advancement of proton therapy nationwide.” The hospital aims to train leading medical professionals while promoting high-level research initiatives.
Impact on Regional Healthcare Systems
Professor He Jie remarked on the significance of the partnership, stating, “This cooperation represents a solid implementation of the ‘Healthy China’ strategy.” By pooling resources from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the collaboration establishes an internationally aligned platform for cancer prevention and treatment. The initiative aims to serve as a model for cancer care across the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
Mr. Wyman Li noted that the partnership would facilitate the integration of healthcare management, talent development, research innovation, and technical exchange. This collective effort is expected to enhance cancer prevention and treatment capabilities not just in the Greater Bay Area, but throughout the country.
Professor Wang Luhua highlighted the mission of the Shenzhen Cancer Hospital as part of the National Cancer Center, stating that their goal is to extend their reach across South China and connect with regions such as Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Collaborating with HKSH, an institution with a century-long legacy, will foster complementary efforts in clinical methodologies, research, and talent cultivation.
The memorandum of understanding sets a foundation for both institutions to engage in short- and long-term collaborations that include sharing best practices in healthcare, training, and the cultivation of medical talent. This partnership is expected to enhance cancer care services to meet international standards, benefiting patients through advanced treatment protocols and clinical trials.
In summary, the alliance between HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital marks a significant step forward in providing high-quality cancer care in China, aligning with national health strategies and addressing the urgent needs of cancer patients.
