Australia Coach Praises Mary Fowler’s Courage in Mental Health Disclosure
Australia’s national team coach, Joe Montemurro, has commended forward Mary Fowler for her bravery in discussing her mental health struggles. Fowler, who plays for the Matildas and is currently sidelined due to a knee injury, revealed in her book, “Bloom,” that she faced significant challenges, including self-harm and suicidal thoughts, particularly during her early career in France.
Fowler’s Journey Through Mental Health Challenges
In “Bloom,” Fowler, now 22, describes her experiences after moving to France at the age of 17 to join Montpellier. The pressure to perform in a foreign country, away from her family and support network, triggered profound mental health issues. She stated that she began experiencing suicidal thoughts while adapting to her new environment, which she found overwhelming.
Montemurro highlighted the importance of Fowler’s openness, saying, “It’s a little bit of a sign of the pressures that professional athletes and sports people are under these days.” He emphasized the significance of discussing mental health more openly, noting that such dialogue can help reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help. “The more we talk about it, the more it’s out in the open, the more that we’re honest about it, I think is amazing,” he added.
Fowler reflected on her darkest moments, recalling a particular incident at the age of 20 while playing in England, where she came close to taking her own life. “In that moment, I didn’t follow through,” she wrote. “But I did sit there for most of the night pleading for anyone up above who would listen to please just take me.” This admission underscores the severe emotional toll that athletes can face.
Support and Recovery
Fowler described her time in France as isolating, exacerbated by language barriers and the absence of family support. She admitted that self-harm became a misguided coping mechanism, stating, “The motivation was to divert my emotional pain.” Reflecting on her past, she recognized that she was grappling with an identity crisis, burdened by the expectations of performance in a challenging work environment.
Despite her struggles, Fowler’s journey is one of resilience. Montemurro acknowledged her courage in facing these issues publicly and emphasized the importance of community support. “This is a perfect example of someone that’s been really courageous and been able to come out with her issues, deal with it, and know that there are people behind her, backing her and want to do what’s best for her,” he said.
As the Matildas prepare for their upcoming friendlies against New Zealand on November 28, 2023, and December 2, 2023, Montemurro has decided to omit Fowler from the squad, allowing her additional time to focus on her recovery. He expressed optimism for her return to action in January 2024.
Fowler’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, particularly in high-pressure environments like professional sports. Through her openness, she not only sheds light on her personal struggles but also paves the way for others to find hope and support amid their challenges.
