Concerts by the popular K-pop group TWICE held over the weekend in Kaohsiung have significantly boosted the city’s economy, generating over NT$500 million (approximately US$15.89 million) in tourism revenue. This impressive figure was announced by Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai during a press briefing at the Kaohsiung City Council.

The performances, which took place at the Kaohsiung National Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, attracted a staggering total of 180,000 fans. The influx of visitors led to bustling shopping districts, crowded night markets, and fully booked hotels, with some vendors remaining open until the early hours of the morning. Mayor Chen highlighted the positive impact of concert-driven tourism on the city’s visibility and economy.

Upcoming Events and Future Bookings

Looking ahead, Kaohsiung is set to host the Asia Artist Awards next month, further enhancing its reputation as a destination for major entertainment events. Mayor Chen noted that the Kaohsiung National Stadium is already “fully booked” for the next year, indicating a growing demand for performances. He mentioned that any new groups wishing to perform may have to wait until 2027 to secure a date.

During the finale of their concert, TWICE engaged with fans by teasing upcoming shows in Taipei. On-stage screens announced an additional performance scheduled for March 22, 2024, alongside the previously confirmed date of March 21, 2024. This excitement adds to the anticipation surrounding the group’s return to Taiwan.

The successful concerts underscore the potential of the entertainment sector to drive economic growth in cities like Kaohsiung. As the city continues to attract major events, it solidifies its status as a vibrant hub for culture and tourism in the region.
