TWICE Concerts Generate NT$500 Million for Kaohsiung’s Economy
The weekend concerts by the popular K-pop group TWICE in Kaohsiung generated an impressive NT$500 million (approximately US$15.89 million) in tourism revenue. The events, held on Saturday and Sunday, attracted around 180,000 fans to the Kaohsiung National Stadium, significantly boosting local businesses and the city’s profile as a tourist destination.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai announced the financial impact during a press conference at the Kaohsiung City Council. He reported that the influx of visitors led to crowded shopping districts, vibrant night markets, and fully booked hotels. Some vendors even extended their hours, staying open until 3 or 4 AM to accommodate the concertgoers.
Chen emphasized the concert-driven tourism’s role in enhancing the city’s visibility. He highlighted that the upcoming Asia Artist Awards, a prestigious South Korean entertainment event, will also take place in Kaohsiung next month, further solidifying the city’s status as a cultural hub.
With the Kaohsiung National Stadium already fully booked for next year, Chen noted that any additional groups wishing to perform there may have to wait until 2027. The overwhelming demand for events at the venue reflects the growing interest in Kaohsiung as a prime destination for international performances.
During the finale of yesterday’s concert, TWICE delighted fans by teasing future performances in Taipei. Screens on stage announced an additional concert date on March 22, 2024, alongside the previously confirmed March 21 date, ensuring that the excitement surrounding the group continues to build.
The successful concerts highlight not only the popularity of TWICE but also the significant economic benefits such events bring to host cities. As Kaohsiung continues to attract large-scale events, the local economy stands to gain even more from future performances and cultural festivities.
