Bollywood Icon Dharmendra Passes Away at 89, Leaving Legacy
Bollywood legend Dharmendra has died at the age of 89 in Mumbai, marking a significant loss for the Indian film industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the actor, stating that his passing “marks the end of an era in Indian cinema.” Dharmendra, affectionately known as the “original He-Man of Bollywood,” captivated audiences for decades with his charm and talent, earning a loyal fanbase of millions.
Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali village, Punjab, Dharmendra, whose birth name was Dharam Singh Deol, rose to prominence after debuting in the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere. Over his illustrious career, he appeared in more than 300 films, becoming best known for his role as Veeru in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay. The film, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, has become a cultural touchstone in Indian cinema.
Dharmendra often described himself as “a simple man” and expressed his gratitude for the affection he received from fans. He found immense success in a variety of genres, excelling in romance, action, and comedy. His portrayal of a prison doctor in Bimal Roy’s 1963 film Bandini earned him widespread acclaim. Transitioning to action roles, he solidified his reputation in films like Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Phool Aur Patthar, where he performed many of his own stunts.
Life and Career Highlights
Dharmendra’s on-screen charisma and good looks earned him a place on global lists of the “most handsome men” during his prime. He was consistently admired by fellow actors, with Madhuri Dixit calling him “one of the most handsome people I have seen on screen.” His romance with Hema Malini, who later became his second wife, captured the public’s imagination, particularly as it unfolded during his first marriage.
Their relationship began at a film premiere in 1965, and despite Dharmendra’s existing family obligations, they became one of Bollywood’s most beloved couples. They married in 1980 amid media speculation regarding their union and reports of a religious conversion to facilitate their marriage, which Dharmendra later denied.
Throughout his career, Dharmendra was not only a prolific actor but also ventured into politics, serving as a member of parliament for Bikaner, Rajasthan, from 2005 to 2009. Despite his celebrity status, he faced criticism for his perceived lack of commitment to political duties, often prioritizing film work and personal interests over parliamentary responsibilities. Reflecting on his political experience, he acknowledged that “politics is not for emotional people; it’s for the thick-skinned.”
Legacy and Lasting Impact
Despite never securing the top spot in Bollywood, losing out to contemporaries like Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra received numerous accolades over the years. In 1997, he was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Hindi cinema, and in 2012, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Dharmendra remained active in the film industry until his later years, often acting alongside his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, and engaging with fans through social media. He expressed that his true desire was never about fame or money but rather the love of his audience. “I came here just for this love. Everyone loves Dharmendra and I am grateful for that,” he shared.
His portrayal of Veeru in Sholay will forever be etched in the memories of his fans, with many considering him the “soul of the film.” Dharmendra’s legacy as an actor, husband, and public figure will continue to resonate within the realms of Indian cinema and beyond. As the curtain falls on this remarkable career, the industry mourns the loss of a true icon.
