Hong Kong’s Health Priorities: Physical Wellness Amid Rising Stress

Cigna Healthcare’s latest *International Health Study* reveals that residents of Hong Kong are exceptionally proactive in managing their physical health, even as stress levels continue to rise. Conducted in May 2025, the study surveyed over 11,000 respondents worldwide, including 1,000 individuals from Hong Kong. The findings underscore an urgent need for holistic health approaches that integrate both physical and mental well-being.

Physical Health Takes Center Stage

The study found that more than half of respondents in Hong Kong, specifically 54%, prioritize physical health as their foremost concern, significantly exceeding the global average of 35%. Following closely are financial health and mental well-being, which rank second and third respectively. Notably, 36% of participants reported maintaining a healthy weight and balanced diet, surpassing the global average of 33%. This data indicates a strong culture of preventive health awareness in the region.

Distinct Weight Management Preferences

In exploring weight management, the study revealed that residents of Hong Kong prefer to maintain their current weight rather than focus on weight loss. Some 43% identified “maintain weight” as their top objective, which is notably higher than the global average of 36%. Conversely, only 36% of Hong Kong respondents aim to lose weight, marking the lowest priority in the Asia-Pacific region and well below the global average of 46%.

The methods employed for weight management also reflect a preference for natural strategies. Approximately 63% of participants engage in regular exercise to manage their weight. Other methods include dietary plans or meal replacements at 39%, while only 6% consult dietitians or nutritionists. Medication use for weight management is minimal, with only 3% opting for this route, compared to the global average of 7%.

Increasing Stress Levels

Despite strong health intentions, stress has become a pervasive issue, with 77% of Hong Kong respondents reporting feelings of stress, a rise from 69% in the previous year. The leading sources of stress include uncertainty about the future (41%), personal finances (35%), and living costs (25%). These factors highlight an urgent need for improved mental health support systems.

Additionally, job satisfaction among Hong Kong employees appears to be lower than the global average. Only 43% expressed satisfaction with their jobs, compared to 52% globally. Furthermore, just 35% were content with their employee benefits packages, falling short of the 39% global average. This gap indicates significant areas for improvement in fostering workplace loyalty and performance through enhanced employee benefits.

Optimism for AI in Healthcare

A noteworthy aspect of the study concerns the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Nearly half, or 48%, of respondents in Hong Kong view the incorporation of AI positively, which is higher than the global average of 45%. The perceived benefits include shorter wait times (44%), reduced administrative costs (40%), and improved support for healthcare providers (31%). This reflects a growing acceptance of technology as a valuable ally in enhancing healthcare services.

Jonathan Spiers, CEO of Cigna Healthcare Hong Kong, remarked, “The survey findings align with what we observe in the market. In Hong Kong, physical health remains a top priority, and rising stress levels highlight the importance of mental well-being. We also see growing confidence in the role of AI to enhance healthcare delivery.” His comments underscore the commitment to initiatives like corporate wellness programs and innovations that promote vitality and a preventive approach to health.
