Director Vikarnan Ashok has shared that his newly released Tamil film, ‘Mask’, draws inspiration from a real estate scam that affected him and his family. The film, which features actor Kavin in the lead role, opened strongly at the box office on November 21, 2023, capturing the attention of audiences.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Vikarnan explained the personal nature of the film’s plot. “It happened in my life. I was a victim of a real estate scam,” he stated, highlighting the emotional and social implications of such frauds. He elaborated on the targeting of middle-class individuals, noting, “People who intend to commit frauds confidently pick the middle class to con as they think that people belonging to this class will hesitate to hit back.” This insight reflects the pressures and constraints faced by middle-class families, who often prioritize their daily responsibilities over confronting fraud.

Exploring Themes of Reaction and Justice

The director delved deeper into the narrative, explaining that the film poses a crucial question: “What if an educated person got an opportunity to react?” This exploration of suppressed anger and the desire for justice forms the backbone of the film’s storyline. Vikarnan revealed that after enduring the consequences of the scam, his family finally recovered their lost money—17 years later, in June 2025.

With Andrea Jeremiah playing the antagonist, ‘Mask’ promises a compelling dynamic. Andrea is not only producing the film but has also previously portrayed negative roles, such as in ‘Vada Chennai’, directed by Vetri Maran. The film is co-produced by S P Chockalingam and is presented by Grassroots Film Company.

A Collaborative Effort in Production

The film benefits from the talents of several notable contributors, including music by National Award winner G V Prakash and cinematography by acclaimed professional R D Rajashekar. The editing is handled by Ramar, with art direction crafted by Jacki and Vijay Iyyappan. This collaboration has sparked significant interest among film enthusiasts and fans alike.

As ‘Mask’ continues to capture attention, Vikarnan’s journey from victim to storyteller resonates with many, shedding light on the challenges faced by those who find themselves ensnared in fraudulent schemes. His reflections serve as an impetus for dialogue about justice and empowerment within society.
