Singapore’s Historic Asian Cup Qualification Celebrated by Lions

Singapore’s national football team, known as the Lions, achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the Asian Cup for the first time on merit. The match began with an early goal from Hong Kong’s Matt Orr, which put pressure on the Lions. However, interim head coach Gavin Lee remained composed, urging his players to stick to the game plan. “We went 1-0 down and he said stick to the game plan … don’t lose focus,” Ilhan recalled. Lee’s halftime message resonated with the team, emphasizing the belief in their ability to overcome adversity.

Lee, who took over as head coach following the resignation of Tsutomu Ogura in June 2023, acknowledged the importance of the team’s resilience. “If things go wrong, it’s our job to react and deal with it,” he stated during the post-match press conference. “As long as we stay in the game, we always knew we had quality players to finish the match.”

Ilhan, who is currently on loan with Thai League 1 club Buriram, demonstrated his commitment to the national team. He came off the bench in the 57th minute, and although he sustained a foot injury during the match, he remarked, “For me, it’s no problem. Anything for the country.”
