Student Embraces Life with Facial Tumor, Inspires Others at Event
A 20-year-old student, Shih Yu-kuei, has shared her journey of living with a facial tumor, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and resilience. Speaking publicly for the first time at the annual meeting of the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation in Taichung, Taiwan, she addressed an audience of 173 families and 587 participants.
During her speech, Shih recounted the challenges she faced after a tumor, specifically a neurofibroma, began to grow on the right side of her face while she was in middle school. This condition made her feel increasingly isolated from her peers. She underwent her first surgery during high school, motivated by her desire to obtain a driver’s license, as the tumor was affecting her vision. “When I looked in the mirror and saw my eye open again after the surgery, a new hope awakened in me,” she said.
Despite the ongoing growth of neurofibromas, Shih has shown remarkable resilience, having undergone four surgeries in total. This summer, she made the decision to postpone another surgery to participate in the foundation’s youth camp. While her team finished last in an icebreaker activity, the support from other teams helped her complete the challenges, fostering a sense of belonging that she had not experienced in a long time.
Accepting her differences was a significant hurdle for Shih. “It was difficult to embrace what set me apart,” she explained. “However, once I recognized that my differences are a strength, my world opened up. I realized I could pursue anything I wanted.”
Shih’s story is one of hope and empowerment. Her experience resonates with many individuals facing similar challenges and highlights the importance of community support in overcoming adversity. The Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation awarded scholarships to 58 individuals with craniofacial conditions during the event, further underscoring the organization’s commitment to supporting those affected by such conditions.
Through her journey, Shih Yu-kuei is not only transforming her own life but also inspiring others to embrace their uniqueness and strive for their dreams.
