Religious Leaders Unite at Global Lecture for Peace and Understanding
The “3rd Special Lecture on Revelation Open to All Nations” concluded successfully on October 30, 2023, uniting over 1,000 participants, including 440 religious leaders from 59 countries. Organized by the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, this event aimed to promote dialogue and peace among diverse religious communities through discussions centered on the Book of Revelation. The initiative has established itself as a significant platform for fostering understanding and harmony among religions.
Held for four days and three nights, the lecture attracted a diverse array of participants, including leaders from Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Confucianism. The event’s theme, “The Path of Understanding Led by the Bible, The Path of Peace Walked Together by Religions,” reflected its mission to explore commonalities among various faiths. Lee Man-hee, chairman of the Shincheonji Church, emphasized the importance of upholding values of truth and peace during his address.
Participants echoed a shared sense of fulfillment and discovery, with many noting that the teachings received from the Shincheonji Church hold significant power. Venerable Yulryeo Seongwon, the chairman of the Council of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, remarked, “This was a time to confirm that this Word is the path for humanity to become one, transcending the walls of religion.”
The event also included interactive components such as prayer meetings for global peace, a Bible quiz, and dramatic presentations to illustrate biblical themes. These activities fostered an environment of empathy and mutual respect among attendees. “I could imagine a monk in robes teaching the Bible,” said one participant, reflecting on the cultural exchanges that took place.
The enthusiasm for scripture study was evident in the “World Religious Leaders’ Revelation Contest,” which saw participation from 317 individuals across 60 countries. Notably, 154 participants achieved perfect scores, highlighting the effectiveness of the educational program. In total, 125 individuals—42 from Korea and 83 international participants—were appointed as Honorary members after completing a rigorous seven-week educational program, including the special lectures.
In addition to the lectures, the event highlighted practical examples of peace in action. Venerable Sok Buntoeun, a leader from Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Religion, shared insights from previous inter-religious exchanges held in his country. His efforts have expanded into events attracting up to 850 participants, indicating a growing commitment to fostering dialogue among religions.
At the conclusion of the lecture, a collective pledge was made by all attending religious leaders to promote peace and understanding. The resolution stated, “We will complete our mission to spread peace and truth, and lead humanity on the path of salvation.” This commitment underscores the potential for inter-religious cooperation and the shared goal of achieving harmony among diverse faiths.
Lee Man-hee reiterated the need for reflection on past divisions among religions, urging leaders to promote dialogue and communication as pathways to peace. He stated, “Let us achieve peace, which is God’s hope and our hope, through dialogue and communication.”
The success of this event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to unite religious leaders from around the world. The first Special Lecture held in February 2024 involved approximately 80 leaders, while the second gathering last year welcomed around 270 participants from 57 countries. The growth in numbers illustrates the increasing interest in interfaith dialogue and collaboration.
As the world navigates complex challenges, initiatives like the Special Lecture on Revelation Open to All Nations play a crucial role in fostering understanding and cooperation among diverse religious traditions.
