Shubman Gill Exits South Africa Test Due to Neck Injury
India’s cricket captain, Shubman Gill, will not continue in the ongoing first Test against South Africa due to a neck injury sustained during the match. The announcement was made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on November 19, 2023, following Gill’s retirement from the field after experiencing discomfort.
In the first innings, Gill managed to score four runs before he was seen rubbing his neck and subsequently left the field. His departure came as India was responding to South Africa’s first innings total of 159, eventually posting 189 runs. After leaving the ground, Gill was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and observation.
The BCCI confirmed that Gill will not participate in the remainder of the Test match. “He will take no further part in the test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the statement read. However, the board did not provide any information regarding Gill’s potential readiness for the second Test, which is set to begin in Guwahati on November 22, 2023.
Gill’s absence from the match is a significant blow for the Indian team, as he has been a key player in recent fixtures. His leadership and batting prowess will be sorely missed as the team looks to secure a victory against a challenging South African side.
The cricket community will be watching closely for updates on Gill’s condition as the team prepares for the upcoming matches in the series.
