2025 MAMA Awards to Proceed in Hong Kong with Respectful Tone
The 2025 MAMA Awards will take place in Hong Kong as scheduled, despite a recent apartment fire that has tragically resulted in over 90 fatalities and left numerous individuals missing. This year’s event promises to maintain a respectful atmosphere while celebrating achievements in the K-pop industry, a hallmark of the Asian music scene since its inception in 1999.
Organisers officially confirmed the event’s continuation in a statement released on November 27. They expressed their condolences to those affected by the fire, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragic fire in Hong Kong. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this devastating event.” The statement underscored the event’s role as a platform for healing and unity, emphasizing that preparations would reflect a “restrained production.”
Honouring Victims with Thoughtful Adjustments
In recognition of the tragedy, the MAMA Awards will feature a moment of silence to honour the victims. The organisers acknowledged the loss, stating, “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and our thoughts are with those injured.” They highlighted the importance of music in providing comfort during difficult times, reaffirming their commitment to a respectful presentation that fosters a sense of community.
Additionally, the event’s red carpet segment has been cancelled, although the ceremony will still be broadcast live from Kai Tak Stadium on November 28 and 29, 2025. Viewers in Singapore will be able to watch the event via streaming platform HBO Max and on tvN Asia.
Changes in the Line-up Amidst Tragedy
Despite the ongoing preparations, several artistes have opted not to participate in this year’s ceremony. Notable withdrawals include members of the Hong Kong band Mirror, acclaimed actor Chow Yun-fat, and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh.
The event is set to feature performances from popular K-pop acts including Ive, Aespa, G-Dragon, and Enhypen. Additionally, a special cover of the megahit song “Golden” will be performed by members of Babymonster, specifically Pharita, Ahyeon, and Rora.
As the MAMA Awards prepare to navigate this challenging time, the focus remains on celebrating artistic achievements while providing a space for reflection and unity across the music community. The organisers remain dedicated to supporting victims of the fire, committing to donations in their memory and ensuring that the event remains a beacon of hope amidst sorrow.
