ASIAN GAMES/Taiwan shuttlers win silver, bronze at Hangzhou Asian Para Games
Hangzhou, China, Oct. 26 (CNA) Taiwan shuttlers Wu Yu-yen (吳于嫣) and Cai Yi-lin (蔡奕琳) on Thursday bagged a silver medal in the women's doubles SH6 final at the Asian Paralympic Games in Hangzhou, China.
In the women's doubles finals, the Taiwanese pair faced Chinese duo Li Fengmei (李鳳梅) and Lin Shuangbao (林雙寶), but had to settle for the silver after losing 9-21, 4-21.
Previously, the Taiwanese duo defeated India's Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan and Rachana Shaileshkumar Patel 22-20, 14-21, 21-16 in the semifinal.
Before the women's doubles final, Wu won a bronze medal after losing to China's Li in the women's singles SH6 semifinal.
Wu reached the semifinals in her first appearance at the Asian Para Games, but her Chinese opponent proved too strong, winning in two straight games 3-21, 5-21.
This is the fourth medal Taiwan has won in badminton so far at the international competition, after Fang Jen-yu (方振宇) took two bronze medals in the men's single and doubles event earlier Thursday.
Sixteen-year-old Wu was born with achondroplasia, a genetic disorder that results in dwarfism.
Responding to her month-long special training and participation in the Asian Para Games, Wu told CNA that she didn't think it was tough, adding "I'm doing what I like, and I've not really thought about going back home. Instead, I've been paying more attention to the games."
At 115 centimeters tall, the Taiwanese player began her badminton journey in fifth grade, but she had to make an extra effort to make up for her physical disadvantage on court.
Recalling her past endeavors, Wu said: "It's quite tough to be a badminton player, but when you win a match, all the hardships are worthwhile."
