Two Killed, Eight Critically Injured in Brown University Shooting
A tragic shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left eight others critically injured on Saturday, December 13, 2023. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred on the Ivy League campus, prompting a significant response from law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which remains on the scene as the search for the assailant continues.
During a news conference, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated, “I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon, and there are another eight in critical status.” He emphasized that at that time, no shooter was in custody. The university’s official website characterized the unfolding situation as an “active shooter” event. Reports indicated that as many as 20 people may have sustained injuries, but Kristy DosReis, the city’s chief public information officer, refrained from disclosing specific figures or confirming fatalities.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and shelter in place while the investigation is ongoing. Attorney General Pam Bondi shared updates on social media platform X, confirming the presence of federal officials at the scene. President Donald Trump also commented on the incident via his Truth Social platform, expressing condolences: “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Brown University, located near Boston, serves a student body of approximately 11,000. This tragic event adds to the growing concern over gun violence in educational institutions across the United States, where legislative efforts to regulate firearm access have struggled to gain traction.
As this situation develops, authorities continue to gather information and encourage community members to stay informed. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge regarding the investigation and the condition of the injured.
