Taiwan Air Force Searches for Missing F-16 Pilot After Ejection
Taiwan’s Air Force has initiated a search operation for a pilot who reportedly ejected from an F-16 fighter jet during a routine training mission over the sea. The incident occurred on January 6, 2024, when the single-seat aircraft took off from Hualien Air Base at 18:17 local time. Approximately one hour after takeoff, the pilot is believed to have ejected approximately 10 nautical miles east of Fengbin Township in Hualien County.
In a statement released by the Air Force, officials confirmed that they promptly established an emergency response center to coordinate the search efforts. Premier Cho Jung-tai has called on Taiwan’s coastguard and nearby fishing vessels to assist in the ongoing rescue operations. The urgency of the situation has heightened as search teams mobilize to locate the missing pilot.
The F-16 involved in the incident is part of Taiwan’s modernization efforts within its military. The island nation has ordered a total of 66 US F-16V jets, which represent a significant upgrade over the older F-16 A/B models currently in service. This enhancement aligns with Taiwan’s broader strategy to bolster its defense capabilities amid increasing military pressure from China.
Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo has previously indicated that the delivery of the new F-16Vs, initially scheduled for 2026, may face challenges. This uncertainty underscores the urgency of maintaining operational readiness for Taiwan’s defense forces, especially in light of China’s aggressive military posture in the region.
In recent years, China has intensified its military activities around Taiwan, frequently sending fighter jets and warships near the island. Such actions are viewed by military analysts as part of a strategy to exhaust Taiwan’s defense resources, often referred to as grey-zone tactics. As Taiwan’s military navigates these challenges, the search for the missing pilot remains a critical focus for the Air Force and the government.
The incident comes at a time when Taiwan is seeking to enhance its air defense capabilities while managing the complex geopolitical landscape in the Taiwan Strait. The outcome of the search operation and the circumstances surrounding the pilot’s ejection will likely draw significant attention both domestically and internationally.
