Taiwan Searches for Missing F-16 Pilot Following Training Mission
Taiwan’s Air Force has initiated a search operation for a pilot believed to have ejected from an F-16 fighter jet during a routine training mission over the sea. The aircraft, a single-seat F-16, took off at 18:17 local time from Hualien Air Base in eastern Taiwan on January 6, 2024. The Air Force confirmed that the pilot is suspected to have ejected approximately 10 nautical miles east of Fengbin Township in Hualien County at 19:29.
An emergency response centre was quickly established, and search operations commenced shortly after the incident. According to Michelle Lee, a spokesperson for Taiwan’s Cabinet, Premier Cho Jung-tai has called upon the coastguard and local fishing vessels to assist in the rescue efforts.
The F-16 involved is part of Taiwan’s ongoing modernization of its air force. The island has ordered 66 F-16V jets, a fourth-generation multi-role fighter that represents a significant upgrade from Taiwan’s aging fleet of F-16 A/B jets. In late 2023, Taiwan completed upgrades to 141 older F-16s to the V standard, enhancing their capabilities. These new aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2026, although Wellington Koo, Taiwan’s Defence Minister, recently indicated that this timeline might face challenges.
Taiwan’s military is currently under significant pressure from China, which claims the self-governing island as part of its territory. In recent years, China has increased military incursions around Taiwan, utilizing tactics that military analysts refer to as “grey-zone” strategies. These actions aim to exhaust Taiwan’s defense forces and assert China’s presence in the region.
The ongoing search for the missing pilot underscores the risks faced by Taiwan’s military as it navigates heightened tensions with China. The situation remains fluid, and the outcome of the search operation is yet to be determined as authorities continue their efforts.
