Puripol Boonson Breaks 10s Barrier in Historic SEA Games Sprint
Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson made a significant mark in athletics history on December 11, 2023, by becoming the first Southeast Asian man to break the 10-second barrier in the 100-meter sprint. This landmark achievement occurred during a heat at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games held at the Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, where he clocked an impressive time of 9.94 seconds.
At just 19 years old, Puripol’s performance not only secured him a spot in the upcoming finals but also positioned him as the fastest sprinter in Southeast Asia, surpassing Lalu Muhammad Zohri of Indonesia, who previously held the record with a time of 10.03 seconds set during the 2019 Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Osaka. Puripol’s remarkable sprint marks a notable improvement from his previous best of 10.06 seconds, achieved at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he earned a silver medal.
In addition to Puripol, another notable competitor in the event, Marc Brian Louis from Singapore, also qualified for the finals with a time of 10.38 seconds. The performances of both athletes have generated excitement among fans and showcased the growing talent within the region.
