Gunman Fires 100 Shots in Sydney, Injures 20; One Critical

A man is in custody following a shooting incident in Sydney that left 20 individuals injured, with one in critical condition. On Sunday evening, October 6, 2023, the alleged gunman fired between 50 and 100 shots into a busy street in the city’s Inner West, targeting both passing vehicles and police. Authorities have confirmed there are no links to terrorism or gang-related activities.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as the gunfire erupted. Office worker Joe Azar described how he initially mistook the sound for fireworks or rocks striking windows. “Some guy’s windshield blew up, then the bus stop glass shattered,” Azar recounted to The Sydney Morning Herald. He added, “It was frantic. It all happened so quick.”
Police Response and Arrest
New South Wales Police responded swiftly, with a large contingent quickly arriving at the scene. Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry confirmed that a 60-year-old man was arrested in an apartment above a business. During the arrest, police seized two rifles and found that the suspect had sustained injuries, which required hospital treatment.
While no formal charges have been filed against the suspect, one man with a gunshot wound is currently in a serious condition at the hospital. An additional 19 people received treatment for injuries related to shrapnel and glass shards, with several requiring hospitalization.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described the shooting as “serious and terrifying,” underscoring the gravity of the situation. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but Lanyon stated that there were no known connections to terrorist or gang activities.
Ongoing Investigation and Context
The police investigation is active and ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the events that unfolded on that fateful evening. Eyewitnesses described the incident as surreal, with one witness named Tadgh likening the chaos to a scene from a movie. “It was very loud and ‘bang, bang, bang’… sparks and smoke,” he told the national broadcaster ABC.
Mass shootings are infrequent in Australia, largely due to strict gun control measures established after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which claimed 35 lives. The recent shooting incident has drawn comparisons to other violent occurrences, including the chase of Dezi Freeman, an alleged gunman who remains at large after the deaths of two police officers earlier this year, and a shooting in Wieambilla, Queensland, that resulted in six fatalities in 2022.
As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event, highlighting ongoing concerns around public safety and gun violence in Australia.
