Fourteen Injured in Stabbing and Liquid Spray Attack in Japan
Fourteen individuals sustained injuries following a stabbing incident at a factory in central Japan on December 26, 2023. The attack occurred at approximately 16:30 local time at a rubber factory in Mishima, Shizuoka, where an unspecified liquid was also sprayed during the assault, according to Tomoharu Sugiyama, an official from the firefighting department.
Emergency services received a call from the factory reporting that “five or six people were stabbed by someone.” Sugiyama confirmed that a total of fourteen individuals required transportation by emergency services for treatment. At least six of the victims were subsequently taken to nearby hospitals in a fleet of ambulances. While the severity of their injuries remains uncertain, local reports indicate that all victims were conscious at the time of transport.
Japanese media, including the public broadcaster NHK, reported that police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the attack. The precise nature of both the stabbing injuries and the liquid spray has not yet been disclosed, leaving many details of the incident unclear.
Context of Violence in Japan
The factory involved in this incident is operated by Yokohama Rubber Co., a company known for manufacturing tyres for trucks and buses. Violent crime is typically rare in Japan, which is known for its low murder rate and stringent gun laws. Nevertheless, the country has experienced occasional violent incidents, including notable attacks in recent years.
One such incident was the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022, which shocked the nation. Additionally, a recent case saw a Japanese man sentenced to death for a shooting and stabbing rampage that resulted in the deaths of four people, including two police officers, earlier in 2023. Another man was charged with attempted murder in May after a knife attack at Tokyo’s Toda-mae metro station.
As authorities continue to investigate the recent attack in Mishima, the community remains on alert, reflecting on the broader implications of such violent occurrences in a country recognized for its safety.
