Asian Airlines Ground Flights to New York Amid Severe Snowstorm
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and several other Asian carriers have cancelled numerous flights to and from New York as a severe snowstorm impacts the region. The United States National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for New York on December 26, 2023, predicting heavy snowfall from 16:00 local time until 13:00 the following day.
According to an SIA travel advisory, the airline has cancelled six flights due to the inclement weather. SIA has committed to contacting all affected customers directly to inform them of the cancellations. The airline indicated that additional flights may also be impacted as the situation evolves.
“Customers affected by the flight cancellations will be reaccommodated on alternative flights or can seek a full refund of the unused portion of their ticket,” the airline stated. Passengers who booked directly with SIA can request a refund online. Those who made reservations through travel agents or partner airlines are encouraged to reach out to those entities for assistance.
Widespread Disruptions at Major Airports
New York City’s airports have been severely affected by the storm. John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International Airport rank among the top four airports in the United States with the most cancellations on December 26, according to the flight tracking platform FlightAware.
In response to the snowstorm, Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific announced that it would waive rebooking and rerouting fees for flights to and from New York. This policy applies to travel scheduled between December 26 and December 29, with passengers needing to change their tickets before Sunday. Travel must be completed by January 31, 2024, subject to seat availability. Cathay Pacific has also cancelled one flight, CX840, from Hong Kong to John F. Kennedy Airport.
Taiwan’s EVA Air confirmed the cancellation of two flights between Taipei and John F. Kennedy Airport due to adverse weather conditions. Additionally, South Korean airline Korean Air has cancelled its evening flight from Incheon Airport to John F. Kennedy as well.
As the storm continues to develop, airlines are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates to their customers. Passengers are advised to remain informed about their flight status and to check with their airlines for the latest information.
