Singapore’s PM Wong Congratulates Japan’s New Leader Takaichi Sanae

SINGAPORE: On October 21, 2023, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officially congratulated Takaichi Sanae on her election as Japan’s new Prime Minister. Ms. Takaichi secured her position following a successful parliamentary vote, marking a significant moment in Japanese politics.
In a letter addressed to Ms. Takaichi, Mr. Wong highlighted that her victory in the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election reflects the party’s confidence in her leadership abilities. He emphasized the long-standing and multifaceted relationship between Singapore and Japan.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Mr. Wong noted that the partnership between the two nations has flourished, particularly in political and economic arenas. “Our cooperation has grown from strength to strength, underpinned by strong people-to-people relations,” he stated.
The Prime Minister elaborated on the extensive collaboration across various sectors, including start-ups, innovation, defence, and security. He also mentioned emerging areas of focus such as digitalization and the green economy, highlighting their potential to further enhance bilateral relations.
Both Singapore and Japan share similar strategic outlooks, with a commitment to upholding the multilateral trading system and supporting a rules-based international order. “We work together closely in regional and multilateral fora,” Mr. Wong remarked.
Japan is recognized as one of ASEAN’s most substantive partners. Mr. Wong reaffirmed Singapore’s dedication to working in close cooperation with Japan, particularly as the country prepares to serve as the country coordinator for ASEAN-Japan relations from 2024 to 2027. “We will continue to deepen our cooperation with ASEAN to foster regional peace and prosperity,” he added.
As both nations prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, Mr. Wong expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Ms. Takaichi to strengthen their ties and build an enduring partnership for the benefit of their peoples.
Farewell to Former Prime Minister Ishiba
In a separate letter on the same day, Mr. Wong extended his best wishes to Ishiba Shigeru as he stepped down from his role as Japan’s Prime Minister. Mr. Wong acknowledged that under Ishiba’s leadership, Japan played a crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation in the region.
“Your leadership in deepening Japan’s partnerships with regional and global stakeholders contributed to the region’s continued growth and stability,” Mr. Wong stated.
He also noted Ishiba’s visits to several Southeast Asian nations within the year, viewing them as a clear reflection of Japan’s commitment to regional peace and prosperity. Mr. Wong underscored the “warm and enduring partnership” between Singapore and Japan, built on shared interests and similar strategic outlooks.
Looking ahead, Mr. Wong expressed optimism about the future of Singapore-Japan relations. He looked forward to Ishiba’s continued support in strengthening ties and expanding cooperation in new and emerging areas. In concluding his messages, Mr. Wong wished both Ms. Takaichi and Mr. Ishiba success in their respective roles.
