American Man Faces Drug Charges for Vape Device at Marina Bay
An American man has been charged in Singapore for possessing a vape device that allegedly contained a Class A controlled drug. Harting Chitty Harold Ivan, aged 35, faced six drug-related charges on September 15, 2023, stemming from an incident that occurred on April 16 of this year at a unit in Marina One Residences, located in the Marina Bay area.
According to court documents, Ivan was found in possession of a vape device containing a viscous substance, later identified as containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. Additionally, authorities discovered chocolate bars in his possession, which were analyzed and found to contain psilocin, a psychoactive compound commonly associated with psychedelic mushrooms.
In addition to these charges, Ivan is accused of attempting to possess two vape devices that contained Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, another Class A controlled substance. He also faced charges related to six other vape devices containing THC. Furthermore, he is alleged to have consumed substances that are markers for cannabis use, specifically 11-Nor-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid and 11-Nor-delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid.
The case is set to be heard again in October, as the legal process unfolds. Ivan has been offered bail set at S$15,000. If convicted for possessing a vape device with a Class A controlled drug, he could face a sentence of up to ten years in prison, alongside a fine of up to S$20,000, or both. Attempts to possess such devices are subject to similar penalties. For the consumption of specified drugs, offenders may be imprisoned for one to ten years, with the same potential fines.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding drug possession laws in Singapore, where strict regulations govern the use and possession of controlled substances. Legal experts suggest that the outcome of this case could set a precedent for future enforcement of drug-related charges in the country.
