Taiwan’s Historic Baseball Documentary Set to Premiere on January 1

A documentary chronicling Taiwan’s national baseball team during their first significant international championship at the WBSC Premier12 will premiere nationwide on January 1, 2024. Titled Hero! Hito! (冠軍之路), the film was co-presented by the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) and memory and storage manufacturer ADATA Technology Co at a press conference in Taipei.

The event coincided with the first anniversary of the team’s remarkable achievement in securing a spot in the international spotlight. CPBL commissioner Tsai Chi-chang expressed his belief that even those who do not follow baseball will connect with the film, as it addresses overcoming challenges and reflects Taiwan’s broader international context.

Director Lungnan Isak Fangas emphasized the film’s authenticity, stating, “What we did in this film is restage the circumstances and players’ emotions during the tournament as authentically as possible.” He encouraged viewers to watch the documentary multiple times, noting the film’s rich detail might be overlooked during a single viewing.

The player interviews featured in the documentary were recorded intensively in March during a break between the World Baseball Classic (WBC) qualifiers and the upcoming 2025 regular season in both Taiwan and the United States. Lungnan expressed hope that Team Taiwan would achieve further success in the upcoming 2026 WBC, potentially paving the way for a follow-up documentary.

As for Team Taiwan’s prospects in the upcoming WBC, data from sports betting site DraftKings Sportsbook shows that Taiwan shares the 14th-best odds among the 20 participating teams, alongside Israel and Australia. They rank ahead only of the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Nicaragua, and Brazil. In March 2026, Taiwan will compete against Japan, South Korea, the Czech Republic, and Australia in Pool C, with their first match against Australia scheduled for March 5.

The documentary not only celebrates a significant moment in Taiwan’s sports history but also serves to inspire future generations as they engage with the sport.
