Mick Schumacher Joins IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing
Mick Schumacher, the son of legendary Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, has signed a deal to compete in the IndyCar series next year. The announcement was made by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) on Monday. The 26-year-old will transition to racing on U.S. ovals after spending the past two years with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). This move follows his departure from his Formula One seat with Haas at the end of 2022.
IndyCar features a schedule that includes six races on ovals or super-speedways, highlighted by the iconic Indianapolis 500. RLL has indicated plans for an oval test for Schumacher in the near future, as the season is set to commence on March 1, 2024.
In a statement released by the team, Schumacher expressed enthusiasm for joining RLL. “Having both an F1 and an endurance background, and having competed in various racing series over the years, I have insights and knowledge that I am sure will contribute to a great partnership,” he said. His father, Michael Schumacher, is a seven-time F1 world champion, and Mick aims to build on that legacy in a new racing environment.
Schumacher also mentioned his excitement about the American motorsport culture. “I was also immediately excited about the car and the American way of motorsport, which comes across as being more about pure and direct racing. It is precisely this aspect that I am very much looking forward to,” he added.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s co-owner, Bobby Rahal, praised Schumacher’s performance during a recent test on the Indianapolis road course. “He impressed every single team member. Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our program,” Rahal noted. The team’s confidence in Schumacher’s abilities highlights their commitment to developing a competitive partnership.
This transition into IndyCar marks an important chapter for Schumacher, who has navigated a challenging period in his career. His experience in both Formula One and endurance racing positions him well for this new venture. As he prepares for the upcoming season, the motorsport community eagerly anticipates how Schumacher will adapt to the demands of IndyCar racing.
