Leverkusen Secures 2-0 Victory Over Cologne with Stunning Goals
Bayer Leverkusen claimed a decisive 2-0 victory over Cologne in the Bundesliga’s Rhine derby on December 13, 2023. The match showcased an impressive performance from substitute Martin Terrier, who scored a remarkable backheeled volley that broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. This stunning goal could be a contender for goal of the season.
Terrier’s extraordinary finish came from a cross by Arthur that was behind him. With remarkable agility, the 28-year-old executed a backheeled scorpion kick to put his team ahead. Just six minutes later, Leverkusen doubled their lead through Robert Andrich, who scored with a powerful header from a corner, effectively sealing the victory.
Leverkusen’s win lifted the team to 26 points, placing them fourth in the Bundesliga standings. They now trail league leaders Bayern Munich, who have 37 points and are set to face Mainz 05 on December 14.
The match saw Leverkusen dominate possession, with opportunities coming early in the second half. Malik Tillman nearly scored after intercepting the ball from Cologne’s Sebastian Sebulonsen, but he shot high over the goal while facing only the goalkeeper. Ibrahim Maza also came close to finding the net, with his close-range shot palmed wide by Cologne’s goalkeeper, Marvin Schwaebe.
The performance displayed by Leverkusen was characterized by control and creativity, highlighted by Terrier’s moment of magic. The team will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming fixtures as they remain in contention for a strong finish this season.
