Jarell Quansah Leaves Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen Seeking Game Time
England defender Jarell Quansah has officially departed Liverpool to join Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen, driven by the desire for increased playing time and a fresh challenge in a new environment. The 22-year-old made this announcement during a press conference on Monday, where he emphasized the importance of game experience for his development as a young centre-back.
Quansah, who has been selected for the England squad this month, made 58 appearances for Liverpool but played only four matches last season. His move to Bayer Leverkusen comes with a five-year contract, reflecting his commitment to advancing his professional career.
Quansah’s Development Goals
“I just wanted to keep progressing in a way where, as a young centre back, you need games to improve,” Quansah stated at St. George’s Park. He acknowledged the invaluable experience gained from training alongside world-class players at Liverpool. Yet, he recognized that at this stage of his career, nearing his 23rd birthday, he requires regular match play to realize his ambitions.
Quansah has hit the ground running in Germany, having played every minute of all nine matches for Bayer Leverkusen this season. He made an impressive debut in the Bundesliga, scoring in a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim. “It’s been good for myself to make that step and go abroad,” he noted, highlighting the support he has received at Leverkusen, where he feels empowered to learn from mistakes.
International Aspirations
In June, Quansah was part of the England team that clinched the European Under-21 Championship. Though he has been included in five previous senior squads, he is yet to earn his first cap. “It is not a strange feeling; I’m really delighted to be here,” he remarked, expressing optimism about making his senior debut soon.
England will host Wales in a friendly match on Thursday at Wembley before traveling to Riga to face Latvia in a crucial World Cup qualifier on October 14, 2023. A win, combined with a draw in the match between Serbia and Albania, would secure England’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Quansah’s transition to Bayer Leverkusen signifies not only his personal growth but also his commitment to contributing to England’s future successes on the international stage.
