Girona’s Livakovic Refuses to Play, Seeking World Cup Spot
Girona FC’s on-loan goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic has declined to participate in matches for the team, citing a desire to explore options that may enhance his chances of being selected for the Croatian national team at the upcoming World Cup. The announcement was made by Girona’s manager, Michel, on December 12, 2023.
Livakovic, who has represented Croatia 71 times and was part of the squad that reached the finals of the 2018 World Cup, joined Girona on loan from Fenerbahce in September. His move followed the arrival of goalkeeper Ederson at Fenerbahce. Despite his transfer, the 30-year-old has yet to make an appearance for Girona this season, as Michel has favored Paulo Gazzaniga as his starting goalkeeper.
Livakovic’s Decision Influenced by World Cup Aspirations
Under FIFA regulations, players are permitted to register with three clubs in a season but can compete for only two. Michel explained that Livakovic’s priorities diverge from those of the club. “He needs to focus on the World Cup, not on Girona,” he stated. Michel further elaborated that Livakovic expressed his intentions directly, sharing that he did not wish to remain with Girona, as playing with the team could hinder his opportunities elsewhere.
“He told me he wouldn’t play,” Michel said, highlighting Livakovic’s frankness about his situation.
This refusal to play was notably evident when Livakovic opted out of a recent match against third-tier side Ourense in the Copa del Rey. Gazzaniga, despite battling illness, was forced to take the field. “He was supposed to play, but he told me he wouldn’t,” Michel remarked, emphasizing the challenge of having only one available goalkeeper at a critical juncture.
Current Standing and Future Challenges for Girona
As it currently stands, Girona is struggling in the LaLiga standings, positioned 18th with just 12 points. The team finished third in the previous season, but Livakovic’s absence adds to the challenges they face as they navigate the current campaign.
With the winter transfer window approaching, Girona’s management will need to address the goalkeeper situation promptly. As of now, Livakovic’s management agency has not responded to inquiries regarding his position.
Overall, the situation underscores the complexities athletes face when balancing individual aspirations with team commitments, particularly in the lead-up to significant international competitions.
