Brahim Diaz Shines as Morocco Defeats Cameroon 2-0 in AFCON Quarter-Final
Morocco’s hopes of claiming their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 50 years remain strong following a decisive 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the quarter-finals, held on January 9, 2025. The match, played in Rabat, showcased the talents of striker Brahim Diaz, who scored for the fifth consecutive game in the tournament, further solidifying his status as a key player for the hosts.
Morocco displayed a disciplined performance, capitalizing on their limited chances. Ismael Saibari also found the net, contributing to the team’s success with one of their three shots on target. Despite Morocco’s efficiency, the match did not see an abundance of opportunities, highlighting their ability to make the most of their few attempts.
The game took a tense turn in the second half when Cameroon appealed for a penalty after a challenge on Bryan Mbeumo. However, the referee dismissed the claims, leaving Cameroon frustrated as they struggled to penetrate Morocco’s defense. Notably, the Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was rarely tested, not needing to make a single save throughout the match.
Morocco’s victory sets them up for a semi-final clash against the winner of the quarter-final match between Algeria and Nigeria, scheduled for January 10, 2025. This next match will also take place in Rabat, and anticipation is building as Morocco seeks to advance further in the tournament.
The win not only boosts Moroccan morale but also keeps alive the dream of a continental title that has eluded them for decades. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Morocco to see if they can harness their current momentum and make history in front of their home fans.
