Wrexham, a club backed by Hollywood actors, achieved a remarkable victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on January 9, 2024. The match ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, leading to a penalty shootout where Wrexham triumphed, eliminating a Premier League team for the first time in 26 years.

The decisive moment came when Wrexham’s goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo, saved the fifth penalty taken by Forest’s Omari Hutchinson. This victory marks a significant milestone for Wrexham, who have rapidly ascended from non-league football to the second tier in just three seasons under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Wrexham started the match with vigor, as Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone scored two quick goals in the first half. With a 3-1 lead in the second half, it appeared Wrexham was set for a comfortable win. However, Nottingham Forest responded dramatically when Callum Hudson-Odoi scored two goals in quick succession, equalizing in the final minutes of the game.

Forest’s head coach, Sean Dyche, had opted to field a largely reserve team, making eight changes from their recent Premier League win against West Ham United. Nonetheless, he introduced key players like Neco Williams, Nicolas Dominguez, and Morgan Gibbs-White in the second half, which proved effective. Igor Jesus reduced the deficit for Forest with a goal in the 64th minute, nodding in a cross that hit the post.

Wrexham’s Dominic Hyam then restored their two-goal advantage with a diving header from a free kick in the 74th minute. Despite this, Hudson-Odoi’s late heroics brought Forest back into contention, forcing the match into a penalty shootout after extra time concluded without any additional goals.

The penalty shootout saw Wrexham come out on top, securing a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup. This victory adds another chapter to their inspiring journey, capturing the hearts of fans and showcasing the club’s potential on a national stage.

Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Championship side Oxford United progressed by defeating League Two’s MK Dons on penalties after a 1-1 draw. League One teams also made headlines, with Wigan Athletic defeating Championship side Preston North End 1-0, and Port Vale overcoming League Two’s Fleetwood Town by the same scoreline.

As the FA Cup continues, the defending champions, Crystal Palace, are set to face non-league side Macclesfield Town, the lowest-ranked team still remaining in the competition, in one of the many matches scheduled for Saturday.
