Azerbaijan Accelerates Establishment of University Innovation Hubs

Azerbaijan is poised to enhance its innovation landscape by establishing several new innovation centers in higher education institutions before the end of the year. This announcement was made by Farid Osmanov, Chairman of the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA), during the “Demo-Day” event of the “Green and Digital Silk Road” international acceleration program. The event is part of the “Startup School 3” project, organized by the Enterprise Azerbaijan portal under the Economic Reforms Analysis and Communication Center.

During his address, Osmanov emphasized the IDDA’s commitment to promoting digitalization and innovation throughout the country. He stated that these efforts are key to developing a unified strategy aimed at improving the well-being of Azerbaijani society and enhancing the efficiency of business processes. “The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and digital tools is no longer a choice but a necessity,” he remarked.

Establishment of Innovation Spaces

Osmanov revealed that innovation spaces are currently being set up at universities in Baku, Sumgayit, and other educational institutions across Azerbaijan. These centers aim to serve as collaborative platforms for government agencies, academic institutions, startups, and business entities. By the end of the year, additional innovation hubs are expected to be established in other universities as part of this initiative.

The overarching goal of these innovation centers is to foster a culture of innovation and create an environment conducive to ecosystem development. Osmanov noted, “Collaboration with universities, executing joint projects, and supporting new initiatives are key parts of this work.” He underscored the importance of strengthening innovative thinking in society and actively involving youth and startups in this transformative process.

Investment in Startups and Venture Funds

In conjunction with these educational initiatives, the IDDA has also established three venture funds aimed at supporting the startup ecosystem. To date, these funds have provided assistance to more than 30 startups, facilitating their growth and connection to both domestic and international markets. Osmanov highlighted that building these connections is crucial for the overall success of innovation efforts in Azerbaijan.

As the country moves forward with these ambitious plans, the collaboration between the public and private sectors is seen as vital for fostering innovation and ensuring that Azerbaijan remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The establishment of innovation hubs within universities is a strategic step towards achieving these objectives, positioning Azerbaijan as a growing player in the field of technology and innovation.
