Azerbaijan to Launch New Innovation Centers in Universities by Year-End

Several new innovation centers are set to be established in higher education institutions across Azerbaijan by the end of this year. This announcement was made by Farid Osmanov, Chairman of the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA), during the “Demo-Day” event of the “Green and Digital Silk Road” international acceleration program on November 21, 2023. The event was part of the “Startup School 3” project organized by the Enterprise Azerbaijan portal under the Economic Reforms Analysis and Communication Center.

Osmanov emphasized that the IDDA focuses on fostering digitalization and innovation initiatives in Azerbaijan. He stated that the establishment of these innovation centers aims to enhance the well-being of civil society, improve the efficiency of business processes, and ensure the accessibility of public services. He remarked, “With rapid technological development, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and digital tools is no longer a choice but a necessity.”

Building Collaborative Innovation Spaces

Currently, innovation spaces are being set up at universities in Baku, Sumgayit, and other institutions nationwide. These spaces will serve as collaborative platforms for government agencies, academic institutions, startups, and business entities. “By the end of the year, additional innovation centers are planned in other universities,” Osmanov noted, highlighting the goal of fostering a culture of innovation.

The initiative aims to create an environment conducive to ecosystem development. Collaboration with universities, executing joint projects, and supporting new initiatives will be fundamental to this mission. Osmanov outlined that strengthening innovative thinking in society and actively engaging youth and startups are crucial for accelerating digital development in Azerbaijan.

Venture Support and Market Access

As part of this effort, three venture funds have already been established, providing support to more than 30 startups. Osmanov stressed the importance of building connections and ensuring access to both domestic and international markets for these emerging businesses.

He believes that collaboration with universities and the creation of joint platforms will significantly contribute to achieving the IDDA’s objectives. By enhancing innovation and digital capabilities, Azerbaijan aims to position itself as a competitive player in the global market.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to advancing technological development and promoting innovation across various sectors in Azerbaijan. The establishment of these centers marks a pivotal step in the country’s journey towards a more digitally integrated future.
