Singapore Backs Israel-Hamas Peace Agreement as Global Leaders React

On October 9, 2023, Singapore expressed its support for the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, marking the initiation of the first phase of US President Donald Trump‘s peace plan. A spokesperson for Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) highlighted that the ceasefire and release of hostages would significantly alleviate the suffering of people in both Gaza and Israel.
The MFA commended the efforts of all the mediators involved, particularly the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye. “We urge all parties to make further progress toward resolving outstanding issues in subsequent phases,” the spokesperson stated. They emphasized the importance of creating conditions conducive for the reconstruction of Gaza, aiming for stability and peace throughout the Middle East.
Details of the Agreement
Israel and Hamas agreed on a 20-point framework that includes a ceasefire and a hostage deal, potentially serving as a first step to conclude a conflict that has resulted in over 67,000 deaths over the past two years. Global leaders have welcomed the agreement, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging stakeholders to seize this “momentous opportunity” to establish a credible political path towards ending the war.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government was among the first to formally recognize a Palestinian state, called for the immediate and full implementation of the agreement. In a show of support, Egypt, which facilitated indirect talks between the two parties, described the development as a “pivotal moment.” Meanwhile, Malaysia labeled the agreement as a crucial step toward ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging comprehensive implementation of the terms agreed upon.
Ceasefire and Future Steps
The initial phase of the peace plan entails the release of all hostages, both alive and deceased, alongside the withdrawal of Israeli troops to a designated line in Gaza. President Trump announced on social media, “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan.” He expressed optimism about the imminent release of hostages and the troop withdrawal as foundational steps toward achieving a “strong, durable, and everlasting peace.”
While the agreement raises hopes for an end to hostilities, several details remain uncertain, including the timing of the hostages’ release, the administration of Gaza post-war, and the future role of Hamas. Trump’s plan envisions a significant role for the Palestinian Authority, contingent upon substantial reforms. The subsequent phase of the plan proposes the establishment of an international entity for Gaza’s post-war governance, to be led by Trump and include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The international community continues to monitor developments closely, with a focus on the implementation of the agreement and the potential for lasting peace in the region.
