Vibrant Redesign Transforms Singapore Apartment into Colorful Haven

A finance professional in Singapore has transformed her apartment into a vibrant, personalized sanctuary, showcasing the interplay of color and art. The owner, who shares the space with her live-in helper and a cherished dog, sought to create a home that reflects her introspective nature while maximizing its architectural potential. Central to this vision was the decision to incorporate the painting “Contemplation” by Chinese artist Dou Rong Jun, despite initial concerns from a numerologist regarding its suitability for a living space.
The artwork, which depicts a man in a contemplative pose, resonated deeply with the owner. “I love it; I like to look at it,” she shared, emphasizing her connection to the painting’s emotive strength. To address the numerologist’s apprehensions, she tactfully placed red packets behind the artwork, a traditional method believed to enhance fortune. This peach-pink painting also inspired the design of a striking metal staircase that elegantly ascends in the double-volume space of her new home.
From Coffee Shop Aesthetics to Bold Color Blocking
Previously influenced by the third-wave coffee shop style, characterized by timber furniture and industrial accents, the owner’s new apartment diverges significantly from her former aesthetic. “I used to go to Melbourne a lot for its cafes,” she explained, reflecting on the origins of her earlier design choices. With the help of designer Lee Hui Lian from OMG Atelier, she embraced a vibrant color palette to define distinct areas within the 1,200 sq ft apartment.
“I used my favourite colours to demarcate each zone – the master bedroom, kitchen, staircase, and loft,” she said. The strategic use of color not only enhances the visual appeal but also clearly differentiates spaces for various activities, such as rest, play, and work. Lee’s initial task involved reconfiguring the apartment’s layout, which originally felt cramped despite its generous size.
The owner purchased the apartment, located in The Crest at Prince Charles in the Tanglin area, due to its impressive vertical volume and abundant natural light. The condominium, designed by renowned architect Toyo Ito, features unique double-storey spaces that allow homeowners to adapt their living areas creatively. The owner was captivated by the open view of the pool and garden, which further solidified her decision to make this space her home.
Creative Layout and Artistic Touches
To maximize the apartment’s potential, Lee designed a lofted study area above the entrance door, maintaining an airy atmosphere next to the double-height windows. A slim metal staircase, which zigzags up the wall, connects the living area to the loft, where Dou Rong Jun’s painting hangs prominently. This innovative approach preserves the openness of the space while adding a sculptural element to the design.
The kitchen underwent a significant transformation as well. Originally an enclosed room, it has been reimagined as an open kitchen adjacent to the living area. This space, painted in soothing avocado-green with light-green mosaic tiles, embodies a playful yet elegant aesthetic. Lee added curved accents to the ceiling and mosaic patterns to infuse a whimsical touch, enhancing the overall design.
In the master bedroom, cobalt walls create a bold backdrop for a large mixed-media artwork titled “Ritratto Di Dama Con Ariete” by Thomas Diego Armonia. The painting, featuring a woman draped in a feather boa, adds a personal touch to the space. The owner described the piece as intimate and evocative, stating, “It almost seems to come to life, with jazz music in the background.”
Another notable addition is a sculpture titled “ITUU” by Scottish artist David Begbie, which occupies a narrow corridor leading to the master bedroom. The sculpture, crafted from steel mesh, showcases a striking depiction of two men. “This sculpture is such a delight to the eyes,” the owner remarked, highlighting its realistic portrayal of musculature.
Throughout the apartment, Lee has harmonized the use of color, ensuring that bold hues complement rather than overwhelm the space. The soft peach-pink of the staircase is inviting, while the greens in the kitchen reflect nature’s calming presence. “We thought of how we can create little ‘vistas’ one notices when moving around,” Lee explained, emphasizing the importance of visual appeal in smaller living spaces.
The owner’s affection for her artworks is evident, as they serve as cherished companions rather than mere decorative elements. “I bought them many years ago. I’m glad about my choices; they seem quite evergreen,” she said, underscoring the personal significance attached to each piece.
In her newly designed apartment, the owner finds joy in the interplay of colors and architectural features. “The different ceiling heights, beams, and colours are a delight to look at, and never fail to fill me with awe and contentment,” she concluded, reflecting a deep sense of satisfaction with her vibrant and thoughtfully curated home.
