Sunway Medical Centre Earns Top Spot in Newsweek’s Smart Hospitals

Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) in Sunway City, Malaysia, has been recognised as the leading hospital in the country, making its debut in the top 350 global hospitals in Newsweek’s World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking. This achievement marks the first time Malaysia has been included in this prestigious international list, with SMC earning the notable rank of 313th among renowned hospitals worldwide.
The rankings are based on a meticulous online survey, the Statista Smart Hospitals Maturity Survey, and accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI). These evaluations assess hospitals on various criteria related to technological integration and operational excellence.
Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group, expressed pride in this recognition, stating, “We are extremely proud to be ranked among the world’s best smart hospitals. The integration of latest technologies and digitalising the medical systems are essential to enhance patient satisfaction, streamline operations, and empower our clinicians.” He highlighted the commitment of Sunway Healthcare Group to patient safety, data privacy, and ethical standards, emphasising the role of digital and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
Building on Previous Success
This latest accolade builds on SMC’s previous successes, as it was also ranked as the top hospital in Malaysia in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2025 list, achieving a spot in the top 250 hospitals globally for two consecutive years. As the flagship hospital of Sunway Healthcare Group, SMC boasts over 300 resident medical consultants, 80 medical specialities, and 28 Centres of Excellence.
The completion of its sixth block, Tower F (Children’s Pavilion), is set to enhance SMC’s capacity to over 1,100 beds. This expansion reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services to its patients.
Accreditations and Recognition
Sunway Medical Centre is distinguished as the first hospital in Malaysia to receive three significant hospital-wide accreditations: the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation Gold Seal of Approval from the United States, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) International accreditation, and recognition from the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).
This recognition by Newsweek marks the fifth consecutive year that the magazine has collaborated with Statista, Inc., a leading global market research and consumer data firm, to evaluate and rank the world’s best smart hospitals. The rankings underscore SMC’s dedication to innovation and excellence in healthcare, reinforcing its position as a leader in the medical field both locally and internationally.
