Singaporean Creator Spreads Holiday Cheer with Free Haircuts
Aidan James Loo, a Singaporean digital marketer and content creator, took the initiative to spread festive cheer on December 24, 2023, by providing free haircuts to residents at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) void deck on Haig Road. In a TikTok video shared that day, Loo showcased his efforts to bring joy to the community, stating, “Thankful for the gift of being able to give. Merry Christmas y’all!”
Equipped with basic barbering tools, a plastic chair, and a tarp, Loo began his charitable mission in the afternoon. Over the course of the day, he offered haircuts to nine individuals, finishing just before 21:30. Many of his patrons were elderly residents, and Loo greeted each one with warmth and friendliness. Notably, he switched from an electric clipper to scissors when one elderly man expressed fear of the noise, demonstrating his sensitivity to the needs of his clients.
Loo’s commitment to community service was not without its challenges. After completing his third haircut, he encountered inquiries from local authorities regarding his activities. Fortunately, the matter was resolved swiftly, allowing him to continue his charitable work without interruption.
The response to Loo’s actions was overwhelmingly positive, with his social media comment section flooded with praise. Many lauded his kindness and referred to the spirit of community he embodied, with one commenter stating, “Now this is charity.” Others highlighted his consideration, noting that the tarp he laid down helped keep the area tidy.
Loo is the founder of Francesco’s Barber Club, a social initiative inspired by the teachings of Pope Francis. Through this initiative, he has provided free haircuts not only to residents like those on Haig Road but also to migrant workers in Singapore. In a previous interview with local media platform Wakeup.sg, Loo shared that he had completed an apprenticeship in a barber shop owned by a friend. Although he has not opened his own establishment, he is committed to using his skills for good.
Loo’s story resonates with many who believe in the power of community engagement, especially during the festive season. His actions on Christmas Eve serve as a reminder of the impact individuals can have in their local communities, highlighting the importance of kindness and generosity.
