The HKSH Medical Group is set to host the inaugural Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Co-operative Group (PTCOG-AO) Conference from November 7 to 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s cancer treatment landscape. This three-day event, themed “Advancing Particle Therapy with Greater Precision and Image-Guidance,” will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the HKSH Proton Therapy Centre.

Since introducing the region’s first proton therapy system in 2023, HKSH has established itself as a leader in precision cancer management. The upcoming conference aims to gather over 400 participants, including leading experts, researchers, and medical professionals from various countries, to share knowledge and advancements in proton therapy.

The conference will feature a series of seminars and lectures from renowned experts, including Professor Marco Durante, Director of the Biophysics Department at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany, and Professor Tatsuya Ohno, Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center in Japan. Both will serve as keynote speakers, providing insights into the latest developments in particle therapy.

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, InvestHK, and nearly 30 local and regional healthcare organizations, the conference will showcase cutting-edge technologies and clinical success stories in proton therapy. Attendees will explore innovative approaches to cancer treatment, with a focus on enhancing medical standards and providing new hope for patients.

Wyman Li, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH Medical Group, emphasized the importance of fostering both talent and technology in advancing healthcare. He noted that the HKSH Proton Therapy Centre has treated over 500 patients in its two years of operation, gaining valuable experience and insights. Li highlighted the centre’s commitment to continuous education and collaboration, which is exemplified by initiatives such as the “Proton Therapy Joint Training Course” conducted with the National Cancer Center in Beijing and the ongoing “HKSH Cancer Centre Proton Therapy Training Programme.”

The PTCOG-AO 2025 conference will delve into various aspects of particle therapy, discussing clinical case studies on cancers including head and neck, breast, gastrointestinal, and pediatric tumours. Advanced imaging technologies, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), will also be explored to enhance the precision of radiotherapy plans, ultimately improving treatment outcomes while minimizing side effects.

The significance of this conference extends beyond knowledge sharing; it aims to foster regional collaboration and elevate the standards of proton therapy in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Simon Tang, Chairman of the PTCOG-AO 2025 Organising Committee, expressed pride in hosting this first-time event in Hong Kong, indicating its potential to drive advancements in cancer treatment.

As the Asia-Pacific region continues to play a pivotal role in technological innovation and clinical application in healthcare, the PTCOG-AO Conference is poised to be a landmark event in the field of particle therapy. By providing a platform for collaboration and exchange, HKSH Medical Group hopes to contribute significantly to the future of cancer care, ultimately benefiting countless patients across the region.
